SS22 Inspiration

ss2 Inspiration fishing boat

The Pilchard Works purchased and restored a traditional Cornish Cove fishing boat, The vessel, registered in St Ives as SS22, carries the name Inspiration.

The secluded fishing coves and their boats that pepper the coastline, reminiscent of smugglers and wrecking, give Cornwall its unique character and are living evidence of a continuing maritime heritage. Despite the trend for bigger boats and modern materials, there are still fishermen prepared to pit their wits against the elements to make a living from fish caught close inshore using traditional methods.

The Inspiration continues these traditions after being restored and re-designed to meet today's modern standards of fish catching and handling. Skippered by well-known local fisherman Dick Ede, she will fish throughout the year for mackerel, bass, lobster, and crab as weather and fishing conditions dictate.

UK fishing vessels are registered to a home port by a unique combination of letters and numbers, usually the first and last letters - St Ives - SS.

The nearest port of registration for the fleet in Newlyn is Penzance, However, as the port of Poole carries the registration letters PE. Penzance vessels have the more distinctive letters PZ. There are examples from other ports around the UK in the harbour at any time for visitors to identify.

Fishermen are often superstitious and reluctant to change the name of a boat which must appear on both bows and across the stern of any vessel.

Years ago a St Ives fisherman, cut from a will after a family dispute, saw him name his boat 'Missed `Inheritance' as a visible reminder of a percieved injustice.
